1. Checking Your Exposure

The Email Check

Visit haveibeenpwned.com and enter your primary email address.

• If the screen turns red: Your data has been found in a known leak.

• The Details: Scroll down to see which specific service was breached—it could be an old social media account or an Indian shopping app you haven't used in years.

The Password Audit

Under the 'Passwords' tab, you can check if a password you frequently use has been compromised. If a password appears in their database, it means hackers have it in their "dictionary" and can use it to break into your accounts via automated scripts. If it shows up even once, stop using it immediately.

2. Immediate Recovery Steps

If you find that your data has been leaked, don't panic. Follow this checklist to lock down your accounts:

• Reset Critical Passwords: Focus on your "Tier 1" accounts first: Gmail/Outlook, Net Banking (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, etc.), and major shopping apps.
• Enable 2-Step Verification (2FA): This is the single most effective way to stop a hacker. Even if they have your password, they can't bypass the OTP or Authenticator app code on your phone.
• Stop Password Recycling: Using the same password for Instagram and your Bank is a recipe for disaster. If one site is compromised, all your accounts are at risk.

3. Proactive Protection

You don’t have to manually check the site every week. Use the "Notify Me" feature on the HIBP homepage. By registering your email there, you will receive an instant alert the moment your data appears in any new Indian or global data breach.
